Baltic Container Terminal
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
Pioneering state-of-the-art IT in the Baltics
BCT is a pioneer in the field of information technology in the Baltic Region. It has invested heavily in the sophisticated terminal operating system (TOS) – NAVIS N4 to ensure the efficient real-time management of the entire container handling cycle. The system includes yard planning, ship planning and equipment control modules. Using this system, it is possible to anticipate a ship’s arrival in detail and plan the operations needed at the terminal throughout the entire process from unloading and stacking to the re-loading of containers.
The terminal has also invested in Radio Data Terminals. These are installed on all yard equipment and a number of hand-held terminals to enable efficient data transmission on-line. An automated gate system has already been in operation for a number of years and a similar module with an inclusive optical characters reading system has also been introduced for rail and vessel operations.
BCT’s Automatic Container Operations Concept
In 2009 BCT began the development of the Automatic Container Operations Concept (ACOC). ACOC is based on the deep integration of modern IT systems into the BCT container terminal operational process. The goals of implementing such a system are the optimisation of the container acceptance/delivery process that includes gate, vessel and rail operations, a decrease of human error rate, a higher quality of service, the improvement of gate/vessel/rail operational performance and long-term operations planning. The Automated Container Operations System at BCT allows the automatic processing of any incoming or outgoing container without human data input. It incorporates 3 key components: gate, quay and rail modules that are integrated with tailor-made modules like a pre-booking system and the interface to the Terminal Operating System – Navis N4.
